It was Spring 2010. I vividly remember sitting in economics class feeling perplexed over supply, demand and market equilibrium formulas before me, when a young man unexpectedly entered the classroom to promote a study abroad opportunity for business majors. I could feel my heart race as I questioned whether this adventure could be for me. Might I really have the chance to go abroad? Where would I come up with the money? Would my parents even consider letting me leave the country at age 20? After the presentation, I didn’t remember the specific country or know where it was on a map; I just knew I wanted to go.
When class was dismissed, the first thing I did was call my Grams. Her response was, “Well, I’ll be.” Out of her or anyone else's concern, I knew I would have Grams support in any endeavor. As for mom and dad, well, I was raised in a home where dreams mattered and you set the bar high to reach your goals, so if I could come up with the money, my parents said they’d support it. Fast forward to the summer—I worked in a sales office on commission and earned enough to buy a ticket from Knoxville, TN to Vienna, Austria. EUROPE AT LAST!
The time spent abroad was the best decision I ever made. Not only did I fall in love with culture and adventure, but I fell in love and married a tall, dark, and handsome young man from Austria. I knew after graduation and starting a family, I wanted to find a way to share our unforgettable experiences with others. So, here I am today, after 10 years of marriage and 6 years in the travel industry. Together, we’ve travelled to Italy, Czech Republic, British Columbia, Slovenia through America and regularly return to Austria and Germany.
